Hi everyone,

Before viewing the film Worse Than War a few years back I had no idea that genocide had taken place in Guatemala. I remember feeling disturbed by my own ignorance as we were seeking to raise awareness of the ongoing genocide in Darfur and mass atrocities in other regions of the world. Guatemala genocide? I knew nothing about it.

Recently, Guatemala took the unprecedented step of prosecuting one of their own on charges of genocide. No country had ever done this before. In fact, adding to the historic nature of this situation, former Guatemalan dictator Efrain Rios Montt was found guilty of the genocide of more than 1,700 indigenous Ixil Mayans during his 1982-83 rule. He was sentenced to 80 years, and then an appeal was entered, so we have not yet reached the end of this story.

On Sunday, September 29, we have partnered with Amnesty International – Irvine and Irvine United Congregational Church Advocates to screen, Granito: How to Nail a Dictator (watch trailer). Given the importance of the issue, we very much hope you will join us. All details are below.
