Expanding the Circle of Compassion

To be alive is to be vulnerable.

When we were children, we used to think that when we were grown-up we would no longer be vulnerable. But to grow up is to accept vulnerability… To be alive is to be vulnerable.
– Madeleine L’Engle

Hi everyone,

April is almost here. I have been doing some soul-searching. Time and again I return to what is possible and re-affirm the vision of a world very different than the one we live in.

It was after 9/11 that it became incredibly clear to me: the best security we have in this life is held within good relationships with one another. Within the embodied, grounded life, held within solid, supportive, warm connections with others, the uncertainties of life become less frightening and we can handle more than we ever could alone.

How can we:

  • Better support one another, giving permission for truth-telling, no matter how awful a truth it is?
  • Normalize the extreme range of experiences that come by virtue of being human in this world?
  • Come to live differently with one another, recognizing that shared authentic vulnerability, in contrast to our deepest fears, is where our greatest strength resides?

April 23, we will focus on the Bosnia genocide. Many were subjected to the extremely brutal violation of sexual assault. For many reasons, this remains one of the most difficult and shameful types of violations to disclose and talk about. Rape is an incredibly effective and way-too-commonplace weapon of war and genocide; it can destroy an entire community without needing to kill. Please join us for the remarkably courageous stories of the women who refused to remain silent and instead sought justice in, I Came to Testify.
