Expanding the Circle of Compassion

Ubuntu Group in Orange County, August 2012

When an impulse is consciously held back, the resulting contraction of the muscles is acute.  Waves of excitation still reach the muscles, which are all a-quiver like racehorses raring to go but restrained by their jockeys.  When the tension becomes chronic, however, the muscles become fixed and the holding back of the impulse becomes unconscious.  A fixed, tense muscle makes a spontaneous movement impossible, so that one is no longer aware of anger or any other feeling, not even of the fact that one is holding back feeling.  Sensitivity in the area is deadened, so that one doesn’t feel the tension.  Years later, when the muscle weakens, pain develops, but by this time the individual cannot make a connection between the pain, the tension, and the suppression of feeling.  The chronic tension in the musculature that prevents an impulse from activating the muscle and thus being experienced…

Hi everyone,

I don’t find the quote above to be the most heart-felt inspirational item I have ever read, but I think it is an important one as it seems to me that it identifies much of the root of some of the challenges we face in life.  Often, we don’t feel very much and mistake that for being “fine” or “okay”.  In reality, an alive body-mind is full of sensations and feelings.  Some of them we enjoy and some of them we don’t.  It is the absence of deep feeling that ought to set of the warning bells more than anything.

Please note:  I am sending this email earlier than usual as we are making a change in our typical Ubuntu group schedule for the month of August.  We will meet one week earlier than usual, on the second Friday of the month, instead of the usual third Friday of the month.  We will return to the third Friday of the month in September and ongoing.

I hope you can be there, on Friday, August 10.

If you would like more information on how to join the Ubuntu group, please get in touch with us. : )

Sorry for any inconvenience,
