All we have to do is not react as if this is a full-blown crisis. All we have to do is keep on denying how frightened we actually are. And then, bit by bit, we will have arrived at the place we most fear, the thing from which we have been averting our eyes. No additional effort required.

–          Naomi Klein (This Changes Everything)

Hi everyone,

The recent tragic attacks in Paris have shocked the world. In our grief, heartbreak, and outrage, we know full well it is not the only place that is suffering on this earth, not by a long shot. Global tragedies remind us that we are all vulnerable by nature of being human. And this is a particularly important point in time for us to pay close attention; our species doesn’t have a good track record of making wise decisions when we feel threatened.

Given the timing of the attacks, many feared the ultra-critically-important-now-or-never-please-make-it-now Paris climate talks might be postponed, yet, they are set to commence November 30 as scheduled and President Obama will attend. That is extremely good news. More good news: many have begun to speak of the climate talks as a much needed opportunity for the world to come together in peace, the ultimate peace summit. Within this context we desperately need international leaders to accomplish bold, enforceable climate agreements.

We need to seize this opportunity to “change everything”. Now more than ever, I am personally asking you to get involved if you aren’t already.

Avaaz, People’s Climate Movement, 350.org and others have called for the largest day of global climate action ever on the eve of the Paris talks.

Orange County for Climate Action (OCCA) will participate. On Sunday November 29, please join us for the climate rally at the Irvine Spectrum. If you don’t live locally, check for an event in your area as this event is one of many taking place all over the world on the same day. We really need your RSVP as there will be last minute updates to communicate to attendees.

Additionally, come join us tonight, Wednesday, November 18 at 7:30pm for the Orange County premiere of This Changes Everything at the Frida Cinema in Santa Ana. The extremely brilliant Naomi Klein book was turned into an excellent documentary by her filmmaker husband, Avi Lewis. Please come if you can. Here is the trailer. Buy tickets here.
